White Sox | Jose Abreu rested

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 08:32:44 -0700

Chicago White Sox 1B Jose Abreu, who was 1-for-21 entering the game Thursday, April 17, was replaced in the lineup by 1B Paul Konerko.

Fantasy Tip: After his red hot start to the season, Abreu is showing signs of being human. This is his first real taste of adversity in the big leagues, and it'll be interesting to see how he responds. If you have other options at 1B, you may want to keep him reserved until he snaps out of it.

White Sox | Paul Konerko to start OD on bench

Mon, 31 Mar 2014 08:40:38 -0700

Chicago White Sox 1B Paul Konerko will start the team's opening day game on the bench, breaking his streak of 16 straight opening day starts. 1B Jose Abreu is expected to start at first games and DH Adam Dunn will serve as the designated hitter against a right-handed pitcher. Dunn is .240 in his career against Minnesota Twins SP Ricky Nolasco.

Fantasy Tip: Konerko's final season will see him sit out often as he platoons at DH and spells Abreu at first base on occasion. For that reason, he's only attractive as a bench player in AL-only leagues.

White Sox | Adam Dunn could be in partial platoon

Mon, 24 Feb 2014 20:47:19 -0800

Chicago White Sox 1B Adam Dunn might find himself in a partial platoon situation, primarily working against right-handed pitchers, with 1B Paul Konerko and 1B Jose Abreu in the first base/designated hitter mix.

Fantasy Tip: Dunn is in a contract year, so perhaps that will help to jump-start his offense. His first three years on the south side of Chicago have been disappointing, as he batted just .197 with a .317 on-base percentage. He will be mostly useful to those in AL-only leagues, and formats which do not penalize strikeouts. Rotisserie owners will find him useful in the power categories still, but he will kill your batting average.

The Chicago White Sox agreed to a six-year, $68 million deal with Cuban 1B Jose Abreu Thursday, Oct. 17, which will be the largest free-agent contract given to an international player. Abreu hit .453 with 33 home runs and 93 RBIs in 63 games in the 2010-11 season in Cuba and missed time with a shoulder ailment. He's expected to take over the first base position from 1B Paul Konerko, who is set to become a free agent and may retire. The Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, Miami Marlins and San Francisco Giants were all interested in Abreu.

White Sox | Paul Konerko discusses future

Fri, 27 Sep 2013 16:24:22 -0700

Chicago White Sox 1B Paul Konerko said Friday, Sept. 27, that next season will be his last if he decides to play another year. He'll take at least a month to decide if he'll return in 2014. "I'm as confused as anybody else," Konerko said. "You can tell. I don't really have answers. I think taking a month off, a month away from this, which I know if I do that, the more you don't play, the needle will always move toward wanting to play. That's what I feel would happen. That's what people tell me." Konerko is willing to play part time next season.
