The Rocky Mountain News' Tracy Ringolsby reports Colorado Rockies 1B Benji Gil was named to the Caribbean Series All-Star team. Gil hit .346 with two home runs and seven walks in six games, helping Mexican champion Culiacan finish second to the Dominican Republic in the four-team event.

Updating an ongoing story, Doug Miller reports for Angels.MLB.com, Anaheim Angels 1B Benji Gil has refused his assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake, according to general manager Bill Stoneman. The Angels have until Tuesday, August 19, to either trade him or release him.

The AP is reporting the Anaheim Angels designated 1B Benji Gil for assignment after Friday's game with the Cleveland Indians. He was batting .192 with one homer and nine RBIs in 62 games. "It was tough," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "It wouldn't be bad for him to go down and gets some at-bats. We know Benji is better than how he has been playing." The team has 10 days to trade, release or option Gil to the minors.
