Cleveland Indians 1B Jason Giambi cracked a solo home run Wednesday, April 17, against the Boston Red Sox. He became the third-oldest player in franchise history to hit a home run. Only Sam Rice (44) in 1934, and Hall of Famer Dave Winfield (43) in 1995 were older.

Fantasy Tip: Giambi will be limited to designated hitter duties, and he won't be playing every day. Limit him to deep AL-only leagues.

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said Wednesday, March 6, that he is not ready to say whether 1B Jason Giambi is a front-runner for a spot in the team's bench. "There's no denying that we love him - absolutely love him," Francona said. "But I don't want to start talking about the roster yet. I don't think that's fair, because somebody else will read something into it. If everybody stays healthy, we're going to have some difficult decisions."

Cleveland Indians SP Daisuke Matsuzaka must be released by March 26 or he'll receive a $100,000 bonus before going to the minor leagues, and the team faces the same situation with DH Jason Giambi and RP Matt Capps. If they go to the minors, each one of them has an out clause for June 1. 2B Ryan Raburn also has an out clause in his contract for June 1.

Updating a previous report, the Cleveland Indians have signed free-agent 1B Jason Giambi (Rockies) to a minor league contract. He would earn $750,000 plus incentives if he makes the team.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Giambi makes Cleveland's 25-man roster, he is only expected to see 200-300 plate appearances this season, with several other players sharing time at DH. Giambi should only be considered in deep AL-only leagues.
