SportingNews.com reports Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera will work with former 1B Andres Galarraga in Spring Training this year, serving as Cabrera's mentor. "Detroit wants me to be with Miguel during Spring Training and that's where we are," Galarraga said. "If it's for Spring Training, I think I will accept, but if it's for the season, I don't want to be away from my home for eight months."

According to The Baltimore Sun, Roberto Alomar is among 15 first-time candidates on this year's Hall of Fame ballot. Edgar Martinez, Barry Larkin and Fred McGriff also are new to the ballot this year. There are 26 candidates, three more than last year. Also on the ballot for the first time are Kevin Appier, Ellis Burks, Andres Galarraga, Pat Hentgen, Mike Jackson, Eric Karros, Ray Lankford, Shane Reynolds, David Segui, Robin Ventura and Todd Zeile.

The Associated Press reports Atlanta Braves 3B Chipper Jones moved past former MLB OF Dale Murphy on the career home run list with his 399th home run Tuesday, June 3. Jones is now in a tie with former MLB OF Al Kaline and former MLB 1B Andres Galarraga.

The Palm Beach Post reports retired slugger Andres Galarraga, who played for the Colorado Rockies, Montreal Expos, Atlanta Braves, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, said he will consider getting back into baseball as a hitting coach in the next year or two. He said an ideal situation some day would be the Marlins because he could remain close to his family. Dolphin Stadium is about an hour south of West Palm Beach, where Galarraga lives.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the Florida Marlins wanted to hire free-agent 1B Andres Galarraga as the team's new hitting coach, but Galarraga wants to play one more season in the bigs before he calls it quits.

The Providence Journal's Sean McAdam reports Boston Red Sox OF Manny Ramirez hit career homer No. 399 Saturday, May 14, tying him with Al Kaline and Andres Galarraga on the all-time home run list. It was his 163rd homer since joining the Red Sox and moved him into 11th place on the club's all-time homer list, past Carlton Fisk and Tony Conigliaro.

The Associated Press reports Colorado Rockies rookie SS Clint Barmes finished April with a .410 batting average, making him just the third major league rookie in history to bat .400 or better through the end of April, with a minimum of 50 at-bats. The other two to achieve the feat were New York Yankees 2B Willie Randolph (1976) and Montreal Expos IF Andres Galarraga (1986).
