Free-agent 1B Carlos Delgado (hip) has been swinging a bat and participating in a running program as he attempts to return to baseball, according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez. "The rehab is coming along, and I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing," Delgado said. "I would say within the next couple of weeks I will have a better idea of when I'm going to be ready because we are going to start sprinting a little bit and I'm going to take batting practice a little bit more often. Right now, it's every other day or every two days just because you just go gradually into it."

Updating a previous item, The New York Post reports free-agent 1B Carlos Delgado (hip) wants to play in 2011 if his hip permits. "If I am healthy, I will find a way," Delgado told MLB.com. David Sloane, the agent for Boston Red Sox minor league 1B Carlos Delgado, said his client is expected to need 10 to 15 games at Triple-A Pawtucket before he's ready to make his return to the major leagues, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald. Delgado had been staying in shape at a Long Island facility close to his Connecticut home and participated in a workout for the Red Sox inside a batting cage at Yankee Stadium Friday, Aug. 6. "Swinging a bat, he definitely still looks like Carlos Delgado," one person in attendance told Roger Rubin and Peter Botte of the New York Daily News. Another person claimed his swing looked right but added "it was hitting in the cage so I'm not sure how much that means."
