"The rehab is coming along, and I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing," Delgado said. "I would say within the next couple of weeks I will have a better idea of when I'm going to be ready because we are going to start sprinting a little bit and I'm going to take batting practice a little bit more often. Right now, it's every other day or every two days just because you just go gradually into it."

"If I am healthy, I will find a way," Delgado told MLB.com. "I know how to play. I don't want to retire. The reason why I put myself through three surgeries in 18 months is because I want to play. Otherwise, I would have just hung it up."

Agent David Sloane said Delgado believes he can play during the 2011 season.

Delgado is expected to review treatment options Friday, Sept. 3, and surgery is not being ruled out. He underwent two surgeries on his right hip in the last year.

Delgado had been staying in shape at a Long Island facility close to his Connecticut home and participated in a workout for the Red Sox inside a batting cage at Yankee Stadium Friday, Aug. 6. "Swinging a bat, he definitely still looks like Carlos Delgado," one person in attendance told Roger Rubin and Peter Botte of the New York Daily News. Another person claimed his swing looked right but added "it was hitting in the cage so I'm not sure how much that means." |
