The Boston Red Sox haven't ruled out re-signing C Jason Varitek or SP Tim Wakefield, and decisions on both players is expected to come soon. BoSox general manager Ben Cherington said they will know by next week. Both players could retire if they don't return to Boston.

Free-agent C Jason Varitek (Red Sox) is trying to make a very tough decision, which may include retirement. He wants to play again and knows there are teams that may be interested, but he will be 40 on April 11. "He's deliberating what he wants to do," said his agent, Scott Boras.

Boston Red Sox principal owner John Henry said last month that C Jason Varitek "should be a part of this organization for the rest of his life." The team has offered him an invite to spring training as a non-roster player, and if he elects to retire, the team is interested in having him in their front office.

The Boston Red Sox are talking with free-agent C Jason Varitek (Red Sox) to see if he would be interested in accepting a deal as a non-roster invitee to spring training. Boston has apparently already made an offer to their long-time catcher, and he was told he'd have an "outside chance" of making the team. Varitek could choose to retire at this point in his career.
