Boston Red Sox SP Josh Beckett worked in previous years with C Jason Varitek, who announced his retirement last week. Beckett made a start Sunday, March 4, working with C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, as the transition begins. "We've had a lot of dialogue," Beckett said. "(C Ryan Lavarnway) caught me in my first BP. I think this was the third time Salty caught me, and (C Kelly Shoppach) has caught me twice." Beckett allowed two walks and a hit in two scoreless innings Sunday against the Minnesota Twins. He threw 36 pitches in all, 18 for strikes, and said he threw nine changeups.
