Boston Red Sox SP Josh Beckett worked in previous years with C Jason Varitek, who announced his retirement last week. Beckett made a start Sunday, March 4, working with C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, as the transition begins. "We've had a lot of dialogue," Beckett said. "(C Ryan Lavarnway) caught me in my first BP. I think this was the third time Salty caught me, and (C Kelly Shoppach) has caught me twice." Beckett allowed two walks and a hit in two scoreless innings Sunday against the Minnesota Twins. He threw 36 pitches in all, 18 for strikes, and said he threw nine changeups.

The Boston Red Sox will hold a press conference Thursday, March 1, as C Jason Varitek will announce his retirement. The press conference will take place at 5:30pm ET at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla.
