As many as four roster spots — three bench jobs and a bullpen role — remain unsettled as the Miami Marlins prepare to break camp and embark on the season. "It's going down to the last day to make those decisions," manager Mike Redmond said. The team has not ruled out making trades to fill those spots.

Miami Marlins OF Gorkys Hernandez started in the outfield Saturday, Feb. 23, in place of OF Justin Ruggiano (back). Marlins manager Mike Redmond said there are other options in case Ruggiano is out for a while. "Bryan Petersen, Chris Coghlan, those guys can also go in there," Redmond said. "We'll mix guys in, Christian Yelich and Jake Marisnick. I'm going to get them in some games, too. I'd like to see them play. We got some other guys: Kevin Mattison. We'll try to mix guys in and out as much as we possibly can and see how it all shakes out."

Now that he has had some time to think about his lineup, Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond said he's thinking about batting OF Giancarlo Stanton third instead of the cleanup spot. "I'd like to see him come up in the first inning," Redmond said. "You think about other power hitters. Mark McGwire, he hit third."

The Miami Marlins aren't necessarily looking for a candidate with tons of managerial experience to replace manager Ozzie Guillen. Former 3B Mike Lowell and OF Jeff Conine have been mentioned, along with Toronto Blue Jays Class A skipper Mike Redmond. The Marlins will need permission to speak with Redmond, but it isn't believed to be an issue. Miami will not consider former Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine.
