The Los Angeles Daily News' Tony Jackson reports Los Angeles Dodgers C Brent Mayne was not signed before midnight Saturday, Jan. 8, meaning the Dodgers cannot negotiate with him again until May 1. Mayne's agent expects the catcher will retire after 15 years in the big leagues.

Diamondbacks.MLB.com's Steve Gilbert reports Arizona Diamondbacks C Robby Hammock will serve as the team's starting catcher in 2004. Veteran C Brent Mayne will be his backup. Hammock's path to the No. 1 job was cleared when the team traded C Chad Moeller to the Milwaukee Brewers and didn't offer a contract to C Rod Barajas. "It's crazy," said Hammock. "I'm not even playing right now and I've gone from hoping to make the team as a utility guy next year to platooning with Rod to all of a sudden people saying I'm the starter with Mayne as the backup. A lot can change, though, so I'm just going to keep working out and getting ready."
