St. Louis Cardinals OF Carlos Beltran is pegged to hit second in the lineup, according to manager Mike Matheny. Beltran would hit behind SS Rafael Furcal and ahead of 1B Lance Berkman and OF Matt Holliday in Matheny's projected lineup.

The St. Louis Cardinals hired Mike Matheny as manager Sunday, Nov. 13, and he'll be introduced as a press conference Monday, Nov. 14. The club did not announce terms of the deal, although it is believed he received a two-year guarantee with a club option for 2014, according to a source familiar with the process.

The Associated Press' Janie McCauley reports San Francisco Giants C Mike Matheny's doctor refused to clear the longtime catcher to play in 2007 after a concussion sidelined him for the final four months of last season. Matheny subsequently retired on Feb. 1, hanging up his catching gear after 13 major-league seasons.

Andrew Baggarly, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco Giants C Mike Matheny (concussion) could be placed on the voluntary retried list, but general manager Brian Sabean said the move would not be imminent. "It's a complicated situation," Sabean said.
