The Associated Press' Janie McCauley reports San Francisco Giants C Mike Matheny's doctor refused to clear the longtime catcher to play in 2007 after a concussion sidelined him for the final four months of last season. Matheny subsequently retired on Feb. 1, hanging up his catching gear after 13 major-league seasons.

The San Francisco Giants have placed C Mike Matheny (concussion) on the 15-day disabled list, due to a concussion, according to the Associated Press. Matheny was hit in the head by several foul balls during a series against the Florida Marlins earlier in the week, and left the game Wednesday, May 31, in the third inning, after getting nailed with a foul tip. He was examined by a specialist the following day in Pittsburgh. "He's really got a mild concussion, which isn't bad, but he's had several of these," trainer Stan Conte said. "The cumulative factor is something we're concerned about, but we don't think it's going to be a long time."

Sponsored by the St. Louis chapter of the Baseball Writers of America, voted upon by Matheny's teammates last year and named for the Cardinals right-hander Darryl Kile who died suddenly during the 2002 season, the award is given to a player who embodies the spirit, determination and professionalism offered by Kile before his abrupt death in June 2002. "I couldn't think of a more appropriate person than Mike to receive an award in Darryl's name. To me, that makes it perfect," Kile's widow, Flynn, said recently. "The qualities everyone noticed in Darryl… they're also so obvious in Mike. He and Darryl were alike in so many ways -- not just in the way they went about their profession, but also in how they treated and cared for their family."
