Updating previous items, the Associated Press reports Tampa Bay Devil Rays C Charles Johnson rejoined the team Tuesday, April 12, after taking a five-day leave of absence to tend to a personal matter. Johnson had been placed on the restricted list without pay Friday, April 8. "There were some personal things I had to take care of back at home," said Johnson. "Unfortunately, I had to leave the club." Johnson hasn't elaborated on the nature of his absence, other than telling MAN Lou Piniella that "it's a very private matter."

Updating an ongoing story, The Associated Press' Fred Goodall is reporting Tampa Bay Devil Rays C Charles Johnson declined to discuss his reason for leaving the team and being placed on the restricted list, asking reporters to respect his privacy. He issued a brief statement saying he was going home to Miami and hoped to rejoin the Devil Rays as soon as possible. "It looks like this will not be a long, drawn-out situation," Devil Rays general manager Chuck LaMar said. "I think in the next several days, he will get things resolved and be back with the club. ... He indicated he will be back here shortly, in the next few days."
