Updating a recent item, the Associated Press' Howard Ulman reports the Boston Red Sox and free agent C John Flaherty (Yankees) reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year, $650,000 contract Thursday, Dec. 22. The deal, which hasn't been officially announced yet, reportedly would also pay Flaherty an additional $100,000 if he was on the Opening Day roster.

Mark Feinsand, of Yankees.MLB.com, reports New York Yankees C John Flaherty will be the starting catcher for the team's game Sunday, April 17, when SP Kevin Brown (back) make his season debut. Manager Joe Torre hinted that the pairing might be a regular one. "We'd like to find the one combination," Torre stated, "just so we have that built-in day off all the time for Jorge [Posada]."
