Toronto Blue Jays C Henry Blanco will catch SP R.A. Dickey's next start Sunday, April 7, instead of C J.P. Arencibia, but manager John Gibbons just wants to give Blanco his first start of the season. Gibbons wants to stick with his plan of having two catchers share Dickey's starts.
Fantasy Tip: Arencibia's three passed balls yesterday probably didn't do him any favors, but it shouldn't drastically reduce his playing time enough to hurt his fantasy value.

Toronto Blue Jays C J.P. Arencibia will start opening day and catch SP R.A. Dickey. He will share catching duties with C Henry Blanco during the season when it's Dickey's turn to pitch. Manager John Gibbons has been impressed with Arencibia when he has caught Dickey this spring.
Fantasy Tip: This doesn't really change Arencibia's value at all. He's best suited as a second catcher in two-catcher formats.

Toronto Blue Jays SP J.A. Happ and C Josh Thole are expected to start the season in the minors. Happ figures to draw significant trade interest, but Toronto thinks he has value starting or relieving at Class AAA, according to a major league executive familiar with the team's plans. C Henry Blanco has the edge as the backup catcher, but the team thinks Thole will be valuable over the next few years.

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons confirmed that SP R.A. Dickey will have a personal catcher this season. Gibbons seems to be leaning toward using Cs Josh Thole or Henry Blanco over C J.P. Arencibia, though, since both Thole and Blanco have experience catching Dickey with the New York Mets. However, Arencibia has been working with Dickey in recent bullpen sessions and will play with him for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

Toronto Blue Jays C J.P. Arencibia is unlikely to catch SP R.A. Dickey on opening day, with Cs Henry Blanco or Josh Thole in the running to catch Dickey in the season opener. Both Blanco and Thole caught Dickey for the New York Mets, and they'll both catch Dickey in spring games. "If you've got any pitcher on your staff that clearly works better with (a particular) catcher, it would be stupid not to do it that way," manager John Gibbons said.

Toronto Blue Jays C Henry Blanco is the favorite to serve as the backup to C J.P. Arencibia this year. Blanco will face competition from C Josh Thole this spring, though, but Thole has minor league options remaining.

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Friday, Jan. 18, that it is not set in stone that C Henry Blanco will be given the primary backup job to starting C J.P. Arencibia. "Blanco has not been guaranteed the job at all," Anthopoulos said. "That's why he's on a non-guaranteed contract. But again, if it works out that Blanco's the backup and (Josh Thole) ends up being optioned down here, organizationally that means things are going well. Blanco was good enough to be the backup and now we've got tremendous depth."
Fantasy Tip: Blanco caught R.A. Dickey's knuckleball in 2010 when both were with the New York Mets, and he carried with him the reputation of a popular, clubhouse leader. However, in terms of his fantasy appeal, he is only worth a look in the deepest of AL-only leagues if he wins the backup job since he'll likely get a maximum of 10-15 at-bats per week.
