Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said C Rod Barajas will be the team's primary catcher next season. Cs Jason Jaramillo and Mike McKenry will back up Barajas.

Updating a previous item, the Pittsburgh Pirates signed C Rod Barajas to a one-year deal worth $4 million. His club option for the 2013 season will be worth $3.5 million and doesn't include a buyout.

Los Angeles Dodgers C Rod Barajas (ankle) could begin his rehab assignment with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga Thursday, July 7. The plan is for him to DH Thursday and Friday, July 8, and catch Saturday, July 9. Until he returns, manager Don Mattingly said C A.J. Ellis will be the primary catcher.
