Pittsburgh Pirates SP James McDonald has been using his slider when he is behind in counts, while finishing with a fastball. He credits C Rod Barajas with rejuvenating his slider this season. "He's got me to trust it a lot more," McDonald said. "He's helped me with how to throw it, the mentality you need to throw it. I threw it before, but I really didn't have the (correct) mindset of how to throw it. He's told me just to throw it down the middle as hard as I can, and it's working."

Pittsburgh Pirates C Rod Barajas was ejected in the second inning of the team's game Wednesday, May 2, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He is the team's first played ejected this season. C Mike McKenry replaced him behind the plate. Manager Clint Hurdle was also tossed.

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said C Rod Barajas will be the team's primary catcher next season. Cs Jason Jaramillo and Mike McKenry will back up Barajas.

Updating a previous item, the Pittsburgh Pirates signed C Rod Barajas to a one-year deal worth $4 million. His club option for the 2013 season will be worth $3.5 million and doesn't include a buyout.
