Cleveland Indians bench coach Sandy Alomar Jr. is not believed to be a strong candidate for the managerial vacancy with the Chicago Cubs, according to a league source Monday, Oct. 7. "From what I've heard, Alomar is not getting that job," the source said. "He is a good baseball man but he is not in the top group that the Cubs are looking at."

Cleveland Indians C Carlos Santana is working with bench coach, and former major league All-Star catcher Sandy Alomar Jr., during the early days of spring training. Alomar is also the team's catching instructor, and pays special attention to the needs of Santana. "Communication is what we're trying to emphasize now," Alomar said. "We don't want him saying yes to something and not actually getting it. Carlos is getting much better with English. He tries, but at times he doesn't understand, but he acts like he does."

Former Cleveland Indians C Sandy Alomar Jr. has accepted a spot on manager Terry Francona's staff for 2013. However, Alomar might still be a candidate for another manager position elsewhere this winter. Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said former Houston Astros manager Bradley Mills is also a candidate to join Francona's staff. Hitting coach Bruce Fields and third base coach Steve Smith will not be back with the Indians for the 2013 season. It is still unclear whether pitching coach Ruben Niebla, bullpen coach Dave Miller or first base coach Tom Wiedenbauer will be back with Cleveland next season.
