Andrew Baggarly, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco Giants RP Tim Worrell has announced his retirement because of neck and shoulder issues. "I've come to grips with the fact my career is over," said Worrell. "I feel like I can't get myself back to that level of competition. Trying to play next year to hold on ... doesn't do the Giants any good. I don't want to end my career like that." The team will place Worrell on the voluntary retired list and he will be paid his $2 million salary this year. Worrell is looking to embark on a coaching career and general manager Brian Sabean said the team would open a door for him.

Updating previous items, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat's Jeff Fletcher reports San Francisco Giants RP Tim Worrell (neck/shoulder) was due to have season-ending shoulder surgery Wednesday, Aug. 23, in which Dr. Ken Akizuki was to perform a routine shoulder cleanup procedure. Worrell is expected to have a 100 percent recovery by the start of spring training. The decision was made to have the shoulder surgery now because his neck injury had not improved.

According to The Associated Press, the San Francisco Giants recalled RP Brian Wilson from Triple-A Fresno to take the spot of RP Tim Worrell (neck) on the roster. This move comes two days after the Giants activated Wilson from his rehabilitation assignment and optioned him to the minors.

Giants manager Felipe Alou hasn't made any formal announcements but did note that Worrell had success in the role in 2003, when he recorded 38 saves.
