Nick Eatman, of DallasCowboys.com, reports the Dallas Cowboys have officially placed LB Dat Nguyen on their Reserved/Retired list. By placing him on the Reserved/Retired list, the Cowboys will retain his rights if Nguyen ever decides to play again, but more importantly, save the $500,000 roster bonus owed him, along with his scheduled 2006 base salary of $1.625. The final two installments of his prorated signing bonus will cost the Cowboys $666,666 against the 2006 salary cap.

Saying he's had "a great ride," Nguyen announced Friday, Feb. 24, he is retiring after seven NFL seasons, all with the Cowboys. He suffered a neck strain and knee injury last season that led to him being placed on season-ending injured reserve Nov. 28.

Tom Orsborn, of the San Antonio Express-News, reports one of the biggest concerns about the Dallas Cowboys' change from a 4-3 defensive scheme to a 3-4 alignment is that LB Dat Nguyen, at 5-11 and 238 pounds, is too small to be successful in the scheme. The 3-4 scheme calls for inside linebackers to take on guards. To make it easier on Nguyen, Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells moved him to the weak-side linebacker position rather than the strong-side spot. The weak-side position, called the "Jack" by the coaching staff, lines up on the side away from the tight end. "The 'Jack' in the 3-4 has historically been the highest tackle-producing position," said Parcells. "Dat's got range. He's a good tackler."

Chad Peters, of DallasCowboys.com, reports most of the Dallas Cowboys' players and coaching staff landed at the Naval Air Station at Point Mugu, Calif., Thursday, July 28, in preparation for the team's training camp in Oxnard. The Cowboys were greeted by hundreds of fans and military personnel at CBC Port Hueneme, which is part of Naval Base Ventura County. And for the second consecutive year, the Cowboys were able to show their appreciation by signing autographs and taking photographs for an hour with the military personnel on hand, many of whom are either returning from service in Iraq or are about to be deployed overseas. "You put your life in perspective," said LB Dat Nguyen during the autograph session. "We do something that we love and enjoy doing. They're doing something to save a country. You put yourself in their shoes and you commend those guys. We're here dodging offensive linemen and they're dodging bullets. We appreciate what they do and we just want to say thank you."

The sources said the Cowboys are considering trading LB Dat Nguyen and a second-round pick in April's draft to New Orleans for Howard. A source close to Howard said he has not conducted serious contract talks with the Cowboys, but both sides have an idea of the parameters of a potential deal.
