Cowboys | Youngsters To Step Up?

Sun, 18 Feb 2001 15:27:52 -0800

Jean-Jacques Taylor reports in the Sporting News several of the Dallas Cowboys younger players may be called upon to step up in 2001. FS Izell Reese will be given a chance to compete for the starting job. He filled in nicely for the last eight games last season, when he started because of George Teague's broken foot. RB Troy Hambrick will be given a chance to earn a spot as a backup RB on the team's final roster. Hambrick's chances will be tied into the Cowboys draft and free agent plans at RB. As previously reported, the team thinks RB Michael Wiley fits the role of third-down back better than full-time backup to Emmitt Smith. If the Cowboys don't re-sign free agent LB Dexter Coakley, Orantes Grant will get a chance to compete for the starting weakside linebacker job.
