The Denver Post's Jim Armstrong reports Colorado Rockies RP Justin Speier asked for and will be granted his release so he can attempt to hook on with another major league team. Manager Jim Tracy left the door open for him to go to Triple-A Colorado Springs and pitch for the parent club down the road, but Speier said he would retire before reporting to the minor leagues.

MLB.com's Thomas Harding reports the Colorado Rockies may decide to add RP Joe Beimel to their 25-man roster, as a result of P Greg Smith moving to the starting rotation to replace injured SP Jeff Francis (shoulder). Other possibilities include non-roster Ps Justin Speier, Juan Rincon and Tim Redding, although Redding has already been reassigned to Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Troy E. Renck, of The Denver Post, reports Colorado Rockies Ps Tim Redding, Juan Rincon, Justin Speier and Matt Reynolds have all been battling for the last spot in the bullpen. General manager Dan O'Dowd said Reynolds is likely to begin the season at Class AAA.
