Cardinals | Seeking outside pitching help

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak is now seeking outside pitching help for the team's starting rotation, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports. Manager Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan have lobbied for former Cards SP Jeff Suppan, who was just released by the Milwaukee Brewers. A club source also indicated an interest in Baltimore Orioles SP Kevin Millwood, but he's still owed about $7.5 million of his $12 million salary. Kansas City Royals SP Brian Bannister is another option. The team is shying away from pitchers that have been idle this season like SPs Pedro Martinez, Braden Looper and John Smoltz.

Free-agent SP John Smoltz (Cardinals) hasn't been throwing but has been working out, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold. Smoltz still won't say he is retired.

Updating a previous item, The Sports Network reports free-agent SP John Smoltz (Cardinals) will not retire despite joining TBS as a broadcaster for the Atlanta Braves. He has informed friends that he plans on staying in shape should an opportunity to pitch with a major league team arise.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal speculates free-agent SPs John Smoltz (Cardinals) and Pedro Martinez (Phillies) will likely eventually sign with National League clubs. Rosenthal names the Cardinals, Phillies, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers as potential players for the two veteran right-handers.

Ken Rosenthal, of FOXSports.com, reports free-agent SP John Smoltz (Cardinals) continues to wait for a job. Some teams are telling him that they might want to sign him in mid March, according to major league sources. Other teams are looking to hold off on him until June or July. Smoltz's preference is still to start. However, if he joins a team midseason, he will be more open to relieving.

Updating a previous report, the New York Post reports free-agent SP John Smoltz (Cardinals) says "nothing is in the works right now" regarding a team for the 2010 season. Smoltz is not worried about being without a team during Spring Training or the start of the regular season.

SportingNews.com reports free-agent SP John Smoltz (Cardinals) continues to work out and has not made a decision on whether he will wait until midseason to join a team, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I've been doing what I've always done this time of year - throwing every other day and getting ready for the season," Smoltz said.
