Fri, 06 Feb 2004 15:42:57 -0800 The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports despite outbidding the Boston Red Sox for OF Ellis Burks, the Seattle Mariners lost out on the veteran, who signed a $750,000, one-year contract to return to the Red Sox on Thursday, Feb. 5. "We called soon after the (former Mariners CL) Kazuhiro Sasaki departure was confirmed (freeing up salary money for Seattle), but apparently he'd gone down the road quite a bit with Boston," Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi said. "Because he'd gone down the road with Boston, we had to be aggressive. I'm pretty sure our offer was better than theirs." Seattle's offer reportedly was $1.25 million.

Rodriguez is on the verge of taking an offer from Detroit, in which he reportedly can earn $10 million a year for four years.

"We have an interest in him on a short-term basis," said Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi. Jim Street, Seattle's MLB.com reporter, wrote that the first call Bavasi made after getting the $9.5 million "windfall" from CL Kazuhiro Sasaki returning to Japan was to Scott Boras, Rodriguez's agent. "We have to see what kind of deals he has out there and how late we are (in the bidding)," Bavasi said. "If he's gone down the road a long ways with a club or two, we are going to be at a disadvantage."
