Mariners | Not concerned with Fernando Rodney

Wed, 19 Mar 2014 11:45:37 -0700

The Seattle Mariners aren't concerned with RP Fernando Rodney after he allowed two hits and two runs (one unearned) while walking one and striking out two Tuesday, March 18. Rodney has a spring ERA of 15.75 in four outings. "The fact is, most closers stink in spring training," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "They pitch in the fifth, sixth innings. It's tough. They're a different animal and it's hard to get their adrenaline going. We just need to keep getting him out there and getting his work in."

Fantasy Tip: Spring training numbers shouldn't have you too concerned. It's the walks and wildness that Rodney will have to control for him not to crumble in 2014. The ERA and WHIP might regress from the past two seasons, but he should be a serviceable second or third closer.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney signs

Thu, 06 Feb 2014 14:22:41 -0800

The Seattle Mariners signed free-agent RP Fernando Rodney (Rays) to a two-year, $14 million deal Thursday, Feb. 6. Rodney could earn up to $15 million with performance bonuses.

Fantasy Tip: Danny Farquhar locked down the closer's role in Seattle late last season after Tom Wilhelmsen lost the job, and he was pretty solid. However, Rodney's impressive run as Tampa's closer in 2013 and closer-worthy contract make him the favorite to enter the 2014 season as the M's stopper. Farquhar could still see some save opps on occasion, but he's merely a handcuff to Rodney in deep mixed leagues now.
