Marlins | Fernando Rodney set for eighth-inning gig

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 14:06:16 -0700

Miami Marlins RP Fernando Rodney said he will pitch in the eighth inning in a setup role.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney lost the majority of his fantasy value with the trade to the Marlins because he'll no longer be receiving save opportunities. At this point, it's likely best to limit your exposure to Rodney to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues.

Marlins | Fernando Rodney's role unclear

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 21:15:30 -0700

Miami Marlins RP Fernando Rodney's role will be announced Friday, July 1, according to manager Don Mattingly.

Fantasy Tip: Considering A.J. Ramos has converted 33 straight saves, Rodney will likely be used as a setup man. If true, Rodney can be dumped in most leagues.

Marlins | Miami reels in Fernando Rodney

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 12:28:31 -0700

The Miami Marlins acquired RP Fernando Rodney from the San Diego Padres Thursday, June 30, in exchange for P Chris Paddack, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: The Friars sold high on Rodney after a great first half (0.31 ERA, 0.87 WHIP, 10.4 K/9 and 17 saves). It's too late for fantasy owners to do the same, since Rodney will lose most of his fantasy value as the likely setup man for A.J. Ramos. Rodney's 3.8 walks per nine will probably get him in trouble in the second half. In SD, Ryan Buchter and Brandon Maurer could split save chances for the lowly Padres. Buchter is a lefty, but he probably should be your first target on the waiver wire if you're searching for saves. Just know that this situation could be ugly moving forward.

Marlins | Fernando Rodney deal close with Marlins

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 11:27:58 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney is part of a deal that is nearing agreement with the Miami Marlins for a Class A prospect, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney would lose most of his fantasy appeal because he'd become A.J. Ramos' setup man most likely. Rodney has been brilliant with 17 saves in as many attempts with a ridiculous 0.31 ERA and 33 K's in 28 2/3 innings. He'll still be a solid ratios reliever, but his shakiness in recent years doesn't give much confidence in him for that role. Brandon Maurer and/or Ryan Buchter could take over in San Diego if the deal is completed. Buchter has been phenomenal, but he is left-handed, and that presents matchup problems. Some sort of committee could be used between the two. Maurer has a 5.73 ERA, so it's hard to buy into him. So Buchter may have the edge, despite being left-handed.

Padres | Fernando Rodney allows first ER of 2016

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 21:26:17 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney allowed his first earned run of the season during an appearance against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, June 21. He still recorded his 15th save.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney went 26 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run before the A's scored with two down in the ninth to cut the lead to 10-7. Rodney came on in the eighth when it was 7-6, however, so he still got his 15th save in 15 chances. There's a good chance San Diego will move him before the deadline, and he could slot into a setup role in that scenario. Don't hesitate to pull the trigger on a deal of your own if the offer is reasonable.

Padres | Fernando Rodney being shopped

Thu, 16 Jun 2016 10:16:46 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney is being shopped the by the team this summer.

Fantasy Tip: Most people will probably do a double take when they see that Rodney is sporting a 0.00 ERA and 0.85 WHIP on the season with 21 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings over 23 outings. He's still walking a lot (3.9 per nine), and his strikeout rate is down from 11.3 K/9 to 8.1 this year, so extreme regression is coming soon. The Padres are looking to sell high, and you should, too.

Padres | Fernando Rodney has been perfect

Wed, 01 Jun 2016 15:51:06 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney has not allowed an earned run in 19 innings this year. The San Diego record for innings without an earned run by a reliever to start the year is 20 by Butch Metzger in 1976.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney has been quite the surprise with San Diego, sporting a 0.89 WHIP and 10 saves after having a 4.74 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with two teams in 2015. Rodney is walking 4.3 per nine innings and striking out 8.1 per nine, so his overall line is due for steep correction. Selling high on Rodney might be the way to go if you're looking good in the saves column.

Padres | Ryan Buchter picks up save

Thu, 12 May 2016 20:20:57 -0700

San Diego Padres RP Ryan Buchter pitched a perfect ninth inning against the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday, May 12, to pick up his first save of the year. RP Fernando Rodney was unavailable after saving both games of a double-header Wednesday, May 11.

Fantasy Tip: It is worth noting that Buchter earned the save chance while Brandon Maurer remained in a setup role. If Rodney starts to struggle, Buchter could be worth stashing.
