Mariners | Fernando Rodney allows another run

Sat, 30 May 2015 06:39:10 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney allowed another earned rule while recording his 14th save of the season against the Cleveland Indians Friday, May 29. Rodney has now allowed at least one earned run in seven of 10 appearances in May, and for the month, he is sporting a 9.00 ERA and opposing hitters have a 1.075 OPS against him.

Fantasy Tip: Amazingly Rodney is still receiving the call to take care of the ninth inning. At some point, his struggles will have to lead to Carson Smith taking over in save situations, especially given Smith's dominance. Smith has a 0.86 ERA, a 0.67 WHIP and a 10.3 K/9 over 21 innings this season, and he should be owned in the majority of formats, especially if you're chasing saves. It isn't out of the question to hold onto Rodney until he loses the job, but unless you badly need the saves, you might be better served with a replacement.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney shaky again

Sat, 23 May 2015 06:52:54 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney allowed a two-run home run while recording his 11th save of the season against the Toronto Blue Jays Friday, May 22. Rodney has now allowed a run in four consecutive outings and five of his last six appearances.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney's ERA has ballooned up to 6.61, and he has allowed three home runs over six innings in May. His job is in danger, especially with Carson Smith pitching extremely well and knocking on the door. Smith has a 0.95 ERA, a 0.78 WHIP and a 10.4 K/9 over 19 innings, and he has only allowed a single home run all season. Smith is worth owning in all but the shallowest formats as a speculative saves candidate, especially since he can help your ratios and strikeouts per inning pitched.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney likely unavailable

Thu, 30 Apr 2015 15:28:58 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney is unlikely to pitch Thursday, April 30, after saving three consecutive games, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. McClendon noted he would go with whoever fit the matchups best in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Tip: Yoervis Medina and Carson Smith are the most likely candidates to vulture a save from Rodney Thursday. While Rodney has seven saves, he also has a 5.23 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. With those ratios, it may not be long before Medina or Smith start seeing a few more save opportunities. The save chasers could find value in the Seattle bullpen sooner than later.

Mariners | M's not overreacting on Fernando Rodney

Thu, 16 Apr 2015 10:09:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney has had a couple of bad outings of late, including a blown save and loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday, April 14, but manager Lloyd McClendon plans to ride out the storm with Rodney. Last year, Rodney blew just three saves in 51 attempts, but he also allowed at least one runner in 47 of 69 outings, including 34 of his 51 save chances. If McClendon chooses to go in another direction, RPs Danny Farquhar and Tom Wilhelmsen (on the disabled list) have closing experience, and RP Carson Smith has closer's stuff.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney owners should be a bit worried by his early-season struggles, especially at age 38. Rodney likely has somewhat of a long leash because of his 2014 season in Seattle, but saves poachers should be looking at Yoervis Medina and Farquhar in case Rodney continues to stumble. Smith is an intriguing bullpen arm, but he might be too far down the pecking order to matter.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney has two bad outings

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 10:21:08 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney suffered his first blown save since July 20 of last year in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday, April 14. It was his second straight rough outing after he gave up four runs in a non-save situation Sunday, April 12. Rodney said his velocity is "fine," but his location has not been sharp. "It's only eight games," Rodney said. "I'm going to prepare myself for tomorrow and try to be ready, because I know I've got my stuff."

Fantasy Tip: Rodney owners have to take the good with the bad. It's early in the season, too, so those that own him shouldn't be all that worried in early April. The good news is that he has plenty of job security in Seattle as the ninth-inning fireman.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney won't pitch Monday

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 16:14:16 -0700

Seattle Mariners RPs Fernando Rodney, Danny Farquhar and Yoervis Medina are not available to pitch Monday, April 13, unless it's an emergency, according to manager Lloyd McClendon. It's unknown who would close if the situation comes up.

Fantasy Tip: Carson Smith may be in live for a save chance tonight if the situation presents itself against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Don't be alarmed if Rodney doesn't pitch in the ninth tonight, as the team likely is looking to get him some rest. Rodney has pitched in each of the team's last two games over the weekend.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney won't change routine

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 13:29:15 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney doesn't plan to change his pitching routine despite baseball's plan to speed up games this year. Rodney showed no urgency coming in from the bullpen for his latest spring outing. Rodney is also working ahead of schedule this spring and feels completely healthy after being bothered by muscle stiffness in his shoulder last year. He feels stronger in 2015 after not throwing in the Dominican Republic during winter ball, too.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney ranks 10th in our list of top-20 fantasy closers for 2015. His job security isn't in question at all, and he's pitching for a Seattle team that is much-improved. However, his seemingly safe floor won't come cheaply in fantasy baseball drafts.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney feeling good

Tue, 24 Feb 2015 21:59:31 -0800

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney is feeling good, and he is throwing much earlier in camp than he did last year. Last season he started camp with a tight shoulder, but he is good to go this year. "This year I just took the first two days to get loose and said I was ready for Tuesday," Rodney said. "It was a good (bullpen session) for me. This year everything is normal."

Fantasy Tip: Rodney is 37, but he remains a useful fantasy option for saves on a team extended to win many games.

Mariners | Plenty of bullpen competition

Mon, 16 Feb 2015 14:55:08 -0800

Seattle Mariners RP Charlie Furbush likely will have a roster spot to open the year, as manager Lloyd McClendon wants two left-handed relievers. The other could be one of RPs Lucas Luetge, Rafael Perez or David Rollins. RPs Yoervis Medina, Danny Farquhar, Tom Wilhelmsen, Dominic Leone and Carson Smith will likely battle for the other four bullpen slots outside of RP Fernando Rodney. Ps Mark Lowe and Erasmo Ramirez are also options.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney with a night off

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 15:44:07 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney will take the night off Monday, Aug. 11, and RP Danny Farquhar will likely handle the closing duties if a situation arises.
