Padres | Fernando Rodney suffers minor leg injury

Sun, 07 Feb 2016 07:10:55 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney (leg), who is pitching for the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean Series, left a game last week after experiencing leg tightness as a precautionary measure.

Fantasy Tip: The injury is not considered serious, so this won't affect the 38-year-old right-hander's fantasy value or impact his status for spring training. He is expected to serve as the Padres' closer, although his knack for allowing baserunners makes him one of the shakiest ninth-inning options in baseball.

Padres | Fernando Rodney financials

Fri, 05 Feb 2016 09:04:12 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney's one-year deal is worth $2 million, and he'll enter the season as the likely closer for the Padres. He'll receive $1.6 million this year, and San Diego has a $2 million option for 2017 with a $400,000 buyout. Rodney can make $1.5 million in performance bonuses based on appearances: $500,000 each for 40, 50 and 60 games. He can make $3.5 million annually for games finished: $250,000 each for 20 and 30, and $500,000 for 40 and each additional five through 65.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney's penchant for putting runners on base makes him walk a tight rope often in the ninth inning. He's a shaky late-game closing option. Some combination of Kevin Quackenbush and Drew Pomeranz could factor in if Rodney struggles.

Padres | Fernando Rodney expected to close

Thu, 21 Jan 2016 08:51:43 -0800

San Diego Padres RP Fernando Rodney is expected to be the team's new closer after the Padres traded RP Craig Kimbrel to the Boston Red Sox this offseason. Rodney made the All-Star team in 2012 when he had 48 saves for the Tampa Bay Rays. He repeated 48 saves with the Seattle Mariners in 2014.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney had only 16 saves with the Mariners and Chicago Cubs last year. He struggled mightily with Seattle before being demoted from the closer's role, and his walks per nine innings was over 4.00 and his K/9 dropped to 8.33. Although he pitched much better with Chicago, Rodney's penchant for putting runners on base makes him one of the most volatile closers in the game, and he won't see as many save opportunities in San Diego.

Padres | Fernando Rodney agrees with Padres

Wed, 20 Jan 2016 07:32:23 -0800

Free-agent RP Fernando Rodney (Cubs) agreed to a major-league deal with the San Diego Padres Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney enters a situation without a set-in-stone closer, and he could be a nice find late in drafts as a third reliever.

Padres | SD still interested in Fernando Rodney

Wed, 13 Jan 2016 17:26:02 -0800

The San Diego Padres are believed to still have interest in free-agent RP Fernando Rodney (Cubs), even after signing free-agent RP Carlos Villanueva (Cardinals) to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million.

Fantasy Tip: The Padres may offer Rodney the opportunity to serve as their closer, which could give them a leg up over the Cubs in the competition to sign him. He went 7-5 with a 4.74 ERA in 68 combined games for Seattle and San Diego in 2015, with 16 saves for the Mariners before he was removed from the ninth-inning role in favor of RP Carson Smith. Despite his struggles last season, Rodney could be worth drafting in the later rounds of mixed fantasy leagues if he will receive a shot to close.

Diamondbacks | Arizona not pursuing Fernando Rodney

Sun, 10 Jan 2016 07:43:42 -0800

The Arizona Diamondbacks are not interested in free-agent RP Fernando Rodney (Cubs).

Fantasy Tip: Rodney has been connected to the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres this offseason. He is likely to be used as a setup man wherever he lands, although he has closing experience and could see an occasional save opportunity. He's only worth targeting in single-universe fantasy leagues at this point.

Padres | SD interested in Fernando Rodney

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 21:05:11 -0800

The San Diego Padres are reportedly interested in the services of free-agent SP Fernando Rodney (Cubs), as are his former employers, the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney would bolster the back-end of San Diego's bullpen, although it's uncertain if he would be in the mix for saves in San Diego or not. He'd likely be used as a setup man at this point.

Cubs | Fernando Rodney might return to CHC

Tue, 08 Dec 2015 21:03:41 -0800

The Chicago Cubs are interested in bringing back free-agent RP Fernando Rodney, but they'll apparently have to battle the San Diego Padres for his services.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney is a veteran who could help bolster the bullpen, although it's unlikely they'd use him in save situations. So for fantasy purposes, this would only help those in rotisserie formats for help in the ERA, WHIP and perhaps holds categories.

Cubs | Fernando Rodney acquired by Cubs

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 16:49:34 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney was acquired by the Chicago Cubs Thursday, Aug. 27, in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Fantasy Tip: Rodney's role in the bullpen is not known at this point, so owners should monitor the situation. Rodney could be a fantasy option if he receives some save opportunities in the final month of the season.

Mariners | Fernando Rodney designated

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 23:29:24 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Fernando Rodney was designated for assignment Saturday, Aug. 22. In a corresponding move, RP Danny Farquhar was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Fantasy Tip: These pitchers are mentioned because this likely cements RP Carson Smith as the closer in Seattle, much like manager Lloyd McClendon said two days ago. Rodney will likely be outrighted to Tacoma or cut outright. Smith's fantasy value isn't the best as he is struggling, but he will at least have job security.
