Although New York Yankees RP David Robertson would seem to be the heir apparent to CL Mariano Rivera, general manager Brian Cashman is not anointing him the closer just yet. "We haven't anointed anybody the closer, so I don't know," Cashman said. "I know Robertson wants it. But we'll see how the winter shakes out and how the competition in spring training takes place." New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is "absolutely" considering playing RP Mariano Rivera in center field for an inning in the team's final series of the season against the Houston Astros this weekend. Rivera will pitch regardless of the score against the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday, Sept. 26, the team's final home game of the season.

New York Yankees RP Mariano Rivera may not be available to pitch in a save situation Friday, Sept. 6, and RP David Robertson said he's unlikely to be available, too. Rivera has thrown each of the last three nights, including a four-out save Wednesday, Sept. 4. Robertson has tossed pitches in the last two games. Manager Joe Girardi said he'll go with matchups in the ninth in a save situation. Only RPs Joba Chamberlain and Adam Warren have recorded saves aside from Rivera and Robertson this year. Rivera blew his sixth save of the season Thursday, Sept. 5.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi wants CL Mariano Rivera to return in 2014. "I don't see any reason why he couldn't do it next year, I don't," Girardi said. "He's made it pretty clear that he doesn't want to (return), but I always say, you know, January rolls around and sometimes you have a different feel about what you want to do." Rivera shot it down and said he already made his decision to retire.

New York Yankees RP Mariano Rivera worked a perfect eighth inning in the All-Star game Tuesday, July 16, throwing 11 of his 16 pitches for strikes in an emotional appearance. The crowd acknowledged him with a standing ovation, and his American League teammates stayed in front of the dugout during his warm-up pitches to have him have the spotlight all to himself. It was by far the most memorable moment of the All-Star game, which the AL won 3-0, and Rivera was named MVP after the game.

New York Yankees RP Mariano Rivera served up a two-run home run to Baltimore Orioles OF Adam Jones in the ninth inning Sunday, July 7, to blow the 75th save of his career. "I wanted it to be more in. It didn't get in enough," Rivera said. "It's too bad. (SP Hiroki Kuroda) pitched a tremendous game and he should have won a game like this."
