Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he is considering using an eight-man bullpen at the beginning of the regular season. With the status of RP Andrew Bailey (thumb) up in the air, RPs Alfredo Aceves, Mark Melancon, Matt Albers, Franklin Morales and Vicente Padilla appear to be locks to make the bullpen. RPs Scott Atchison, Michael Bowden and Justin Thomas are also in major league camp and could make the 25-man roster.

The Boston Red Sox paid SP Aaron Cook a $100,000 retention bonus, which means he will be on the team's roster to start the season, although not necessarily the 25-man roster. He can still opt out of his current deal by May 1. SP Vicente Padilla received the same $100,000 bonus as Cook.

Boston Red Sox Ps Alfredo Aceves, Daniel Bard and Felix Doubront are the three remaining candidates for a rotation spot this spring. SPs Andrew Miller (hamstring) and Vicente Padilla (hamstring) are out of the race due to injuries. SP Aaron Cook won't be stretched out in time for opening day. Aceves and Doubront could be the favorites at this juncture.

Boston Red Sox SP Vicente Padilla (hamstring) is dealing with a right hamstring injury that he suffered in the weight room. It's unclear how long Padilla will be sidelined as he competes for a rotation spot.

Boston Red Sox Ps Felix Doubront and Vicente Padilla both had scoreless outings in the team's spring game against the New York Yankees Tuesday, March 13. Doubront tossed four shutout innings and Padilla went for three hitless innings.

Boston Red Sox SP Vicente Padilla likes to throw a big looping curveball, known as an eephus pitch in baseball parlance, on occasion. He was working on it in the bullpen Tuesday, Feb. 21, and manager Bobby Valentine asked him about it. "He's got a plan and he's a pretty veteran guy," Valentine said. "He says it's going to be part of his arsenal. Possibly when men on base, too, which is my concern. But he says he can work on it." Padilla is a candidate to fill the vacant fifth starter job.
