Atlanta Braves CL Billy Wagner recorded his 1,170th career strikeout against the Florida Marlins Friday, Aug. 27, according to The Associated Press. He snapped a tie with Jesse Orosco for most career strikeouts by a left-handed reliever.

Sports Network reports RP Jesse Orosco, who had signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks in November, announced his retirement from MLB. "Jesse has had one of the great careers in our game and we respect his decision of ending it before officially taking the field as a member of the Diamondbacks," said Arizona general manager Joe Garagiola Jr. The 46-year-old pitcher holds the major league record with 1,248 relief appearances and 1,252 overall appearances.

The Associated Press reports free-agent P Jesse Orosco, at 46 the oldest player in the major leagues, agreed Monday to a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Orosco, who has been invited to spring training, would get an $800,000 salary if he is added to the major league roster and would have the chance to earn an additional $200,000 in performance bonuses.

The AP reports the San Diego Padres will be prepared to use a bullpen-by-committee if regular closer P Trevor Hoffman (shoulder) isn’t ready by opening day. Manager Bruce Bochy stated, “We have some guys who can get it done. Is it one guy? No. A lot will depend on who we're playing, what hitters are coming up, who's hot in the bullpen." The bullpen is expected to consist of P Kevin Walker and P Jesse Orosco from the left side and P Jay Witasick, P Jaret Wright and P Brandon Villafuerte from the right, barring any springtime trades for relief help.
