Updating a previous report, Jon Paul Morosi, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Tigers RP Matt Mantei (shoulder) has informed the team that he plans to retire.

Updating a previous item, Booth Newspapers' Danny Knobler reports there were strong suggestions made March 3 that Detroit Tigers RP Matt Mantei (shoulder) would end his comeback attempt and retire. "I think he's going to think about things," manager Jim Leyland said. "I question very much whether he's going to want to go through a lot of treatment or rehab." Mantei left camp March 2 after experiencing right shoulder discomfort.

Jon Paul Morosi, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Tigers RP Matt Mantei (arm) left the Tigers' spring training camp to receive an examination on his throwing arm. Mantei started feeling discomfort in his arm after he pitched Sunday, March 2, in Grapefruit League play.

The Detroit Free Press' Jon Paul Morosi reports Detroit Tigers RP Matt Mantei, who has not pitched since the 2005 season, is pleased with the progress he has made in a comeback attempt but cautioned that the next 10 days would be a "big test" for him. He is scheduled to throw a bullpen session every other day, culminating with a live batting practice session.

Jon Paul Morosi, of the Detroit Free Press, reports free-agent P Matt Mantei will throw a bullpen session Friday, Jan. 11, in front of officials for the Detroit Tigers. If Mantei is impressive in his session, it is likely the Tigers will sign him to a minor league contract.

Jason Beck, of Tigers.MLB.com, reports former Detroit Tigers P Matt Mantei requested his release from the team during his rehabilitation in Triple-A. Mantei has suffered injuries every year he has pitched in the Major Leagues and said during Spring Training he would retire if he suffered another long-term injury.
