Free-agent RP Trevor Hoffman (Brewers) announced his retirement from baseball Tuesday, Jan. 11, according to MLB.com's Barry M. Bloom. Hoffman finishes his career with an all-time record with 601 regular-season saves. He will return to the San Diego Padres in a front-office role. "It's time to retire. It's time to move on," Hoffman said. "This is more of a self-evaluation. I expect to pitch at a certain level and I had to be honest with myself that I wasn't certain I could maintain that anymore."

Updating previous reports, the San Diego Padres could sign free-agent RP Trevor Hoffman (Brewers) if at least to let him retire as a member of the team, AOL Fanhouse's Tom Krasovic reports. Former general manager Kevin Towers had aspirations to do such, and there's a better chance of it happening with Sandy Alderson and Paul DePodesta no longer in the organization.

"I'm going to wait to see what happens, see what's out there," said Hoffman, when reached by phone in San Diego, where he and his family still make their home. "It's not a situation where I'm going to pursue it very hard. If it's something that makes sense, if it's an opportunity for me to close, I'll look at it. If it's something that doesn't make any sense, I'll probably retire."
