The Colorado Rockies talked briefly with the Pittsburgh Pirates about RP LaTroy Hawkins, but the Rockies are likely to keep the veteran reliever. The team is interested in picking up the option on Hawkins at $2.25 million.

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss gave CL LaTroy Hawkins a vote of confidence. Hawkins is 10-for-11 in save chances, but hitters are hitting .314 off of him. "I look at the body of work for the whole season," Weiss said. "He's had a couple of tough ones the last couple of times out, but I think his stuff is still intact. I think some of his pitches have been elevated, and that's got him in trouble. But his velocity is the same. The action is the same. Location is what it usually comes down to." Hawkins said he thinks he's leaving pitches up in the zone.

Colorado Rockies RP Rex Brothers suffered a blown save in the eighth inning Monday, April 14, after allowing a run on three walks in an inning of work. He now has allowed seven walks and just two hits in 5 2/3 innings this year.
Fantasy Tip: For those that drafted him hoping that he'd beat out LaTroy Hawkins for the closer gig, those hopes have probably dimmed a bit. He still needs to be rostered in NL-only leagues, but he's very expendable in mixed leagues.

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss said both RPs Rex Brothers and LaTroy Hawkins were unavailable to pitch Thursday, April 3. RP Chad Bettis would have closed if a save situation would have presented itself.
Fantasy Tip: That explains why Matt Belisle was on in the eighth inning with a one-run lead against the Miami Marlins. Belisle allowed four runs to be saddled with the loss.

Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss said he could use a closer-by-committee between RPs LaTroy Hawkins and Rex Brothers this season, depending on matchups in the ninth inning. Hawkins isn't a fan of the closer title, and he wouldn't mind it if Brothers sees the majority of save chances as the season progresses. "I love him," Hawkins said. "He's got a great arm. I've been saying it from Day 1, I'm just keeping that seat warm. That's all, just keeping it warm. When he's ready, I'll give it to him. That's Brothers' inning. He has way more years doing that job than I do."
Fantasy Tip: Brothers is widely seen as the more valuable commodity, since he has age and upside on his side. Both relievers are worth owning in mixed leagues, but they should come off the draft board after most of the other closer hopefuls do.

The Colorado Rockies are looking at the trade market for a right-handed setup option. CL LaTroy Hawkins is likely to cede the closer role to RP Rex Brothers at some point, which would make Hawkins available (along with RP Matt Belisle) as a late-inning righty. Another source indicates the club prefers to give RP Chad Bettis or RP Chris Martin a chance before pursuing a trade.

Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort said RP LaTroy Hawkins isn't necessarily the "everyday" closer this season. RP Rex Brothers could be used if a group of lefties is due up in the ninth inning in a save situation.
Fantasy Tip: This gives credence to the fact that Brothers is likely the better saves option over the full season than Hawkins. Hawkins should enter the year receiving more save chances, but that could change easily, and Hawkins has said in the past that he prefers pitching the eighth inning.

Colorado Rockies RP LaTroy Hawkins will compete with RP Rex Brothers for the closer's role in spring training next year. Hawkins went 3-2 with a 2.93 ERA and 13 saves for the New York Mets in 2013.
Fantasy Tip: Brothers performed well in his first taste of the ninth at the end of last season, and we fully expect him to win the job over Hawkins, who personally said he wasn't fond of closing out games last season with the Mets.
