The St. Louis Rams have hired former DT La'Roi Glover to be their director of player programs, reports Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Glover will help the players make the transition to pro football and assist them with various off-field matters.

PR.com reports free-agent DL La'Roi Glover (Rams) has officially announced his retirement after 13 seasons. "I'm blessed that I was able to play this game that I love for so long. It has been such an incredible journey. The players, coaches, and front office staff in the cities I've played have all given me so many great memories." Glover said. "I still love the game with the same passion I had as a young player in high school, so I plan to always be attached to it in some way, whether commentating, working in the front office, or scouting. But who knows what opportunities await in the next chapter of my life."

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams DL La'Roi Glover (knee) will need offseason knee surgery to repair torn cartilage and is considering retirement. "I don't know yet. I really don't," Glover said when asked if he wanted to keep playing beyond this season. "We'll get the last (game) going, try to win it, take a break. See how the family's feeling. Talk to my wife about it, and go from there." However, Glover has thought about retirement enough that he has talked to other players about it. "I talked (Saturday) to a guy who was retired about trying to go out like a Michael Strahan or a Jerome Bettis," Glover said.

"Once I did get picked up, I kind of used that (Oakland release) as a motivation. Let's hypothetically say it's the second week of two-a-days, and I don't really feel like practicing today. It's kind of like the devil and the angel," said Glover. The approach worked and it would be eight years since he would get released again.

Steve Korte, of the News-Democrat, reports the St. Louis Rams plan to use DL Jason Fisk as part of their defensive tackle rotation along with starting DTs Jimmy Kennedy and La'Roi Glover. "We brought him in here because of his ability to be a backup nose and play when we need some help in there," Rams head coach Scott Linehan said. "When people are trying to run the ball at us, he gives us some depth on the line." Fisk is happy to be with the Rams. "It was a great opportunity for me to come in here and play with a team that has all the talent to do whatever we want." Fisk said he was glad to be playing in a 4-3 defense after playing nose tackle in a 3-4 defense with the Browns and the San Diego Chargers.

Clarence E. Hill Jr., of the Star-Telegram, reports Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admitted to delaying a decision about DT La'Roi Glover's future because he's uncomfortable with the conversation. But the reality of the situation, according to Jones, is that it's a conversation the Cowboys must have because of Glover's high salary cap number and his diminished role on the team. With a $7.2 million cap figure in 2006, including a $1.5 roster bonus due Friday, the salary and production don't add up for the Cowboys, making it very likely Glover will be released this week if he doesn't agree to a huge reduction in pay.

He wants to return to the Cowboys, but he wants to play more than when he was pushed to the backup role behind DT Jason Ferguson in early December. "That would be true. I want to play. I do want to be a full-time guy," Glover said. "I'd like to have a bigger role." Glover has had not talks with the team about his situation. He's due a $1.5 million roster bonus in March, making his return questionable.

Hill Jr., of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports some of the defensive linemen on the Dallas Cowboys, namely DE Greg Ellis and DT La'Roi Glover were skeptical about their roles in the new 3-4 defensive alignments heading into the season, but they've come to accept their reduced playing time for the sake of the team. "I like what he is doing," Ellis said of head coach Bill Parcells rotating his defensive linemen. "You don't just rely on one person to make all the plays. Players get tunnel vision and don't see the big picture. He is putting us in positions to do the best we can to help the football team." Glover agreed: "I wasn't winded at all in the fourth quarter. Usually I am gassed at that part of the game. But I wasn't winded or tired." Glover was able to register a fourth quarter sack in Week 1.

Jean-Jacque Taylor, of the Dallas Morning News, reports Dallas Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells addressed the team Friday, July 29, and he implored them to put their individual agendas aside. "I'm hopeful of having a team that will subordinate its ego for the greater good," Parcells said at his first news conference of training camp. "Hopefully, we'll get some chemistry. That's what everybody is doing these days. It's nothing that's unique to the Dallas Cowboys." Parcells' words seemed directed at two of his best defensive players: DT La'Roi Glover and DE Greg Ellis because their roles are probably going to change more than any other players on the roster.

Tom Orsborn, of the Express-News, reports Dallas Cowboys DT La'Roi Glover realizes his playing time is going to slip some this season. Early in his career he observed how veteran players reacted to reduced playing time. He found that some shrugged it off, acted professionally and benefited from the rest. Others "took it to heart" and went into "the tank." Glover is determined to make the best of his situation in Dallas, although he still expects to be on the field at key moments. "It will help to get a rest, a blow," Glover said. "But when the first-team defense goes on the field after the kickoff, I want to be part of that unit. And in the fourth quarter, when the game is on the line, I want to be on the field then as well." "I think (Glover) fits in fine," said Cowboys head coach Bill Parcells. "I think he'll be fine. I want to play him 60-65 percent of the time. He's certainly going to (play on obvious passing downs). That's half the plays right there."
