USAToday.com reports the New Hampshire American Defenders of the Can-Am League exercised their 2009 option on RP Rich Garces.

The Canadian Press reports pitcher Rich Garces has retired from baseball after failing to make the Colorado Rockies at the start of spring training. Garces signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies on Jan. 24 after spending seven seasons with the Boston Red Sox.
