The Houston Astros announced Friday, Oct. 19, that they've hired John Mallee as their hitting coach. They also added Dave Trembley to their coaching staff. Dave Clark will return in an unspecified role and Doug Brocail will return as the pitching coach. Mallee was the hitting coach for the Miami Marlins.

Houston Astros general manager Ed Wade wasn't prepared to say whether pitching coach Doug Brocail would return next year. Brocail, who retired after the 2009 season, was working as a special assistant to Wade this year when he took over as pitching coach when Brad Arnsberg was let go in June.

The Houston Astros fired pitching coach Brad Arnsberg Tuesday, June 14, and will be replacing him with former RP Doug Brocail. Brocail had been serving as a special assistant to general manager Ed Wade.

Veteran right-handed P Doug Brocail says he's retiring after a 15-year Major League Baseball career, according to The Houston Chronicle. In an interview with KRIV-TV in Houston, the 42-year-old hurler says he's retiring, in his words, "because it's harder to get my arm in shape, and the talent just isn't there anymore." Brocail last pitched for the Houston Astros.

Brian McTaggart, of MLB.com, reports the Houston Astros offered salary arbitration to free-agent RP Jose Valverde (Type A) Tuesday, Dec. 1, but declined arbitration to free-agent SS Miguel Tejada (Type A), RP LaTroy Hawkins (Type A) and RP Doug Brocail (Type B). The Astros remain interested in re-signing Valverde, Tejada and Hawkins.
