San Francisco Giants RP Jeremy Affeldt (hand) sliced his right hand with a knife trying to separate frozen hamburger patties, and he is out for the season. The injury was to his non-throwing hand, a deep gash on his right palm. He had surgery to address nerve damage.

San Francisco Giants RP Ramon Ramirez worked a perfect 11th inning Sunday, Aug. 21, against the Houston Astros for his third save. He was working in the save chance because RP Jeremy Affeldt already worked two innings before him. Affeldt and Ramirez are part of a four-pitcher closer-by-committee while RP Brian Wilson (elbow) is on the 15-day disabled list.

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy could use RP Jeremy Affeldt in the closer's role while RP Brian Wilson (elbow) is on the disabled list, because of his ability to handle both left-handed and right-handed batters. However, Bochy will not hesitate to use him prior to the ninth inning if there is a favorable matchup or a series of hitters he wants him to face earlier in the game. Bochy added that Affeldt could be used for two-inning saves or even longer relief appearances.
