Philadelphia Phillies SP Carlos Zambrano will pitch two innings at extended spring training Saturday, May 18, and pitch every five days thereafter. SP John Lannan (knee) will throw a bullpen session early next week and is "closer, but he's not close" to coming back.

Fantasy Tip: Both Zambrano and Lannan could become options to take Roy Halladay's (shoulder) spot in the rotation with him out indefinitely. Both hurlers are dart throws in NL-only leagues if you're desperate.

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Phillies SP Carlos Zambrano received no guarantees about an opportunity to pitch for the parent club. The right-hander is headed to extended spring training. He has the opportunity to opt out of his contract on July 1.

Fantasy Tip: Big Z failed to impress with his change of scenery in 2012, as a member of the Miami Marlins, and pitched only 3 2/3 frames for Venezuela in the WBC. There's not much reason to believe that he'll capitalize on this one. Those in NL-only leagues who are desperate may want to tuck him away.

Free-agent SP Carlos Zambrano (Marlins), who agreed to terms with the Long Island Ducks of the Independent League last week, never actually signed a contract because he still thinks he can get a deal with a major league team. Zambrano worked out Monday, May 13, and the Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds were in attendance. The Phillies reportedly were close to signing Zambrano last week.
