Free-agent C Jason Varitek and SP Tim Wakefield each have received a bit of outside interest, but both players are expected to either re-sign with the Boston Red Sox or elect retirement.

Free-agent SP Tim Wakefield (Red Sox) is nearing a decision on whether he will retire from baseball. Wakefield is expected to make his decision by the weekend. He has not ruled out playing for another team, even in the National League.

The Boston Red Sox haven't ruled out re-signing C Jason Varitek or SP Tim Wakefield, and decisions on both players is expected to come soon. BoSox general manager Ben Cherington said they will know by next week. Both players could retire if they don't return to Boston.

Free-agent SP Tim Wakefield (Red Sox) has received interest from multiple teams but is also contemplating retirement. His preference would be to return to the Boston Red Sox for one more season but they have not offered him a contract. Wakefield didn't say he would sign with another team but he also didn't rule it out.

The Boston Red Sox are still searching for low-cost pitching options on the free-agent market. Pitchers that are still looking for work include free-agent SPs Brandon Webb (Rangers), Scott Kazmir (Angels), Armando Galarraga (Diamondbacks), Jon Garland (Dodgers), Rich Harden (Athletics), Clay Hensley (Marlins), Livan Hernandez (Nationals), Brad Penny (Tigers), Joel Pineiro (Angels), Jeff Francis (Royals), Zach Duke (Diamondbacks), Bartolo Colon (Yankees) and Tim Wakefield (Red Sox).

The Chicago Cubs could take a chance on free-agent C Jason Varitek (Red Sox) or SP Tim Wakefield (Red Sox) because of their familiarity with executive Theo Epstein. The Cubs have shown preliminary interest in both players.

Free-agent SP Tim Wakefield (Red Sox) has "a strong desire" to return to the Boston Red Sox for one more season. He said he hasn't weighed all of his options yet but nodded when asked if he would consider pitching for a National League team.

The Boston Red Sox offered DH David Ortiz and RP Dan Wheeler arbitration. Ortiz is a Type-A free agent, and Wheeler is a Type B. The team declined to offer SP Erik Bedard, OF J.D. Drew, SP Tim Wakefield, RP Trever Miller, C Jason Varitek and OF Conor Jackson arbitration.
