"The coaches advised me exactly of what's going on. I'm the role guy. If a tackle should go down, I jump in. If an end should go down, I jump in. I play all four positions. It's a challenge, but it's a new role for me. It's a little different, but that's where you have to really check your ego because you realize there's something bigger than just yourself. You have to put the team first," Ekuban said.

"You could tell there was soreness in the leg area," Shanahan said. "Since he's been back, he has looked much better." Shanahan said he is able to tell Ekuban's legs are improving each day.

Ekuban played a lot last year in Denver's rotation and is solid against the run and the pass. If free agent acquisition DE Kenard Lang can fill Ekuban's role as the top backup at defensive end, the Broncos don't think the loss of Pryce will hurt much.

When the two were teammates with the Cleveland Browns, Ekuban posted a career-high eight sacks. "We fed off each other because we were competitive," Ekuban said. "Week in and week out we'd go in the film room and find out who had the most tackles and assists and sacks."

Ekuban spent most of the offseason recovering from shoulder and knee surgeries, but he said he's feeling good during camp. He is still only practicing once a day.

"It's a violent game and it's probably the first (exchange to) even (be called a) skirmish," head coach Mike Shanahan said. "I can't call it a fight; it wasn't a fight, because one guy wouldn't even allow himself to get into the fight. But you lose your poise in practice, you lose it during the games. You've got to keep your composure, and the teams that do fight usually fight during the season and a lot of times it will cost the team a game."
