The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports free-agent SP Garrett Stephenson (shoulder) will miss the entire 2004 season after having surgery on his right shoulder to repair a significant tear. Stephenson's agent Bean Stringfellow, confirmed Cardinals orthopedist Dr. George Paletta performed the procedure last month. "It's a shame because Garrett had several major-league offers," said Stringfellow. "But, in fairness, we had to tell them he was experiencing a shoulder problem."

During the telecast of the St. Louis Cardinals vs. the Cincinnati Reds, it was announced Cardinals P Garrett Stephenson was optioned to Single-A West Palm in a paperwork move. Their season ends on Monday, Sept. 1, so Stephenson should be back on the big league roster when rosters expand.

Updating an ongoing story, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports St. Louis Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty will not make a trade for a pitcher right now, even after ace Matt Morris went on the disabled list with a broken hand. It once appeared that Cardinals OF J.D. Drew was almost certainly to be dealt due to his inability to stay healthy and his free agent status at the end of the season. Now it seems less likely that he will be dealt, instead SP Garrett Stephenson, who ruffled feathers with his recent criticism of the decision to remove him from the starting rotation is the most likely candidate to be dealt.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss reports St. Louis Cardinals SP Garrett Stephenson has been demoted to the bullpen and is unhappy. "I'm disappointed because I don't think I deserve it," said Stephenson. "How can (Cardinals manager Tony La Russa) be (upset) about me saying that? I don't deserve it. I'm sorry." Stephenson is 4-10 this season but lost four potential victories due to blown saves.
