"Nothing makes a guy that respects the game and respects human beings like Terry Francona feel worse than looking at a guy and saying, 'Go ahead, [mess] with me, [mess] with your teammates, I'll put you in the lineup,' and then turn around to a guy who's there every day early working his [butt] off who gets 110 at-bats a year and saying, 'You know what? Yeah, I can't put you in there tonight'," Schilling said. "There were times when you had players who were on like fire duty, 'Show up tomorrow, I'm not sure if you're playing or not, we've gotta find out what [Manny] wants to do.' That's not fair to anybody."

"As I stated yesterday [Thursday] the pendulum is swinging very heavily in the direction of it just being over. I've never sat around and not gotten ready to head to Florida, well not in 23 or so years anyway, so to me that will likely be the last real test for me and whether or not I want to put the time and effort into getting after it one more time," Schilling said.

He also had biceps tenodesis surgery - in which the biceps tendon is moved outside the shoulder into a hole in the bone where the diseased tendon can repair itself. "[He had an] unusual tear of the rotator cuff, small partial thickness, no separation from the bone. Small undersurface tear," Dr. Craig Morgan said. "What we didn't want to find is a big rotator cuff tear, because that's a long rehab."

Schilling has not been dealing with any pain in the shoulder and has been responding well so far to his rehab. "I haven't thrown yet, so that's the big piece of this. I could go and throw next week and feel miserable and would all be for nothing," Schilling said. "But I don't envision that with the amount of work we've done that I'm going come back and be out. We're set now to go for an extended period of time with me throwing and getting more amped up on the throwing side of things to see how far we can take it."

Updating a continuing story, MLB.com's Ian Browne reports the Boston Red Sox are not putting a timetable on SP Curt Schilling's (shoulder) estimated return from a partially torn rotator cuff and damage to his biceps tendon, according to general manager Theo Epstein, who spoke Thursday, Feb. 14. "It's not really our place to put a timetable on it right now," said Epstein. "He'll be rehabbing and strengthening for at least six to eight weeks. We'll see where we go from there." The GM also said both sides now seem "to be on the same page" regarding the plan to rehab the injury and avoid a surgical route. "Curt's here in camp to work hard and rehab and do everything in his power to get back in a position to contribute and help this team on the field," said Epstein. Schilling did not speak to the media Thursday.

The Red Sox have prescribed a plan of rest and rehabilitation, beginning with the cortisone shot. Schilling's doctor, Dr. Craig Morgan, believes the treatment prescribed by the team has no chance of succeeding and that Schilling's injury requires surgery if he is to have any chance to play this season. "If (the Sox plan) was successful, I think it would be the greatest thing known to man," Morgan said in a phone conversation this morning. "But unfortunately that's not the case.
