"Ultimately, it's not his call," Cashman said. "It's the manager's call in consultation with the medical staff. If there's any concern, then he won't start." As part of his deal he will receive a $9 million signing bonus. Sabathia will have already received $6 million of his bonus plus $3.5 million of next year's salary by Opening Day next year. His salary in 2009 will be $14 million and $23 million in each of the final six seasons of the deal. Sabathia will receive semi-monthly installments over all 12 months of the year, meaning he will have received six payments of $583,333 before the 2009 season opener.
