The order of the rest of the rotation isn't fleshed out yet, but Girardi said it will definitely be a five-man rotation. SPs Michael Pineda, Ivan Nova and Hiroki Kuroda are also expected to be in the rotation.

The vesting option will become mute if he finishes the 2016 season on the disabled list due to his shoulder, if he spends more than 45 days on the DL in '16 or if he makes six or more relief appearances due to a shoulder injury.

Sabathia said he "got a little lax during the season" with his conditioning. "I think it's something I need to do, regardless, for me - and be proactive," Sabathia said. "I just need to go out and be healthy and try to do what I can to be out there for every start with this team. For me, that means losing weight, so that's what I'll do."
