Yankees | CC Sabathia solid in setback

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 23:58:39 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia allowed three earned runs, five hits and three walks with five strikeouts over six innings in a quality start and loss against the Texas Rangers Wednesday, April 27.

Fantasy Tip: The outing was Sabathia's best of the season, but it still wasn't good enough to pick up his first win since April 9. He has a 5.06 ERA and 1.69 WHIP with 15 strikeouts over 21 1/3 innings. He is worth rostering in AL-only fantasy play, but he has tailed off so much that mixed leaguers won't want to bother with him.

Yankees | CC Sabathia leaning on cutter more

Fri, 22 Apr 2016 15:06:46 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia has thrown a cutter with 36.8% of his pitches to right-handed batters this season compared to just 3% of pitches in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia has limited right-handed hitters to a .648 OPS through his first two starts, but he still sits with a 5.06 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP to start the campaign. Sabathia is a low-end option in cavernous mixed and AL-only formats, at best.

Yankees | Knee brace helping CC Sabathia

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 18:14:15 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia is 3-1 with a 2.57 ERA in six starts since switching to a tighter-fitting knee brace in September of 2015.

Fantasy Tip: While Sabathia is never going to return to being an ace for the Yankees or fantasy owners, he could be a serviceable option in AL-only leagues if his knee holds up.

Yankees | CC Sabathia will be in rotation

Fri, 01 Apr 2016 14:29:02 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia has been named the fifth starter in the starting rotation. He is scheduled to start against the Detroit Tigers Saturday, April 9.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia recorded a 5.51 ERA during spring training but will start the season in the rotation. Sabathia is not a great option for owners in deeper mixed leagues, but he could be used during the season if he has a favorable matchup. He should be selected in most AL-only drafts.

Yankees | Joe Girardi undecided on fifth starter

Thu, 31 Mar 2016 12:45:36 -0700

New York Yankees SPs CC Sabathia and Ivan Nova are still competing to be the fifth starter in the rotation. Manager Joe Girardi said he still has not made a decision Thursday, March 31.

Fantasy Tip: Neither pitcher is carrying significant fantasy value. Nova posted a 5.07 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP through 17 starts last season, and Sabathia owns a 4.81 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP through his past 69 starts over the last three years. You'll want to avoid both starters outside of cavernous mixed and AL-only formats, and even in those deep leagues, Nova and Sabathia are low-end options.

Yankees | Yanks rotation decision could linger

Wed, 30 Mar 2016 15:08:43 -0700

With New York Yankees SP Ivan Nova firing an impressive spring start Wednesday, March 30, manager Joe Girardi said a decision on the team's fifth starter could take a little while longer to decide. Nova has been competing with SP CC Sabathia. "He threw really well," Girardi said of Nova, who allowed only an infield single in the second and a soft line single in the third and lowered his spring ERA to 4.13 from 5.50. "We've got to go back and have some serious discussions about what's next and what do we do here?"

Fantasy Tip: It seemed like a foregone conclusion yesterday that Sabathia would win the job, mainly because of his experience. But now it's uncertain. Sabathia is still likely to get the nod, but he'll have a short leash. Injuries and poor performance the last few seasons show Sabathia's sharp decline from ace territory. He's nothing more than a final-round flier in cavernous mixed leagues.

Yankees | CC Sabathia the default starter

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 15:16:20 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia gave up two earned runs on three hits in five innings of a rain-shortened spring game Tuesday, March 29, and appears to have won the fifth starting job over SPs Ivan Nova and Bryan Mitchell. Manager Joe Girardi said it was "his best outing of the spring." Girardi said it would be too tough to tell Sabathia he'd be demoted to the bullpen after 15 seasons.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia and Nova have near identical numbers this spring, with neither that impressive, but Mitchell had stellar numbers. The Yanks are going with experience and the guy with the biggest payroll number. That doesn't necessarily mean he's the best option for fantasy owners. Sabathia had a promising finish to 2015, but it's fair to wonder how much he has left in the tank. He's mainly an AL option these days.

Yankees | CC Sabathia thinks he'll crack rotation

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 12:30:06 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia has not been officially told he will begin the season in starting rotation, but he believes he will be.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia is battling Ivan Nova for the fifth-starter job, but unless Sabathia breaks camp in the rotation, he doesn't carry fantasy value. At this point, view the veteran lefty as a low-end flier in AL-only formats. Sabathia has an unimpressive 4.81 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through his past 69 starts over the last three years.

Yankees | CC Sabathia out of rotation?

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 10:24:03 -0700

New York Yankees CC Sabathia is a candidate to be dropped from the starting rotation, and he's fighting for the final spot with SP Ivan Nova. One of them is expected to serve in relief barring an injury to another starter.

Fantasy Tip: This wouldn't be a total surprise given Sabathia's injuries and problems with alcohol abuse last season. A surge in the second half last year provided some optimism, but the fact is Sabathia is a shell of his former self and hasn't been profitable for fantasy owners in the last three years. Avoid him in mixed universes.

Yankees | CC Sabathia's role uncertain

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 06:26:40 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia believes he will be part of the starting rotation this season but has a 7.36 ERA during spring training. Sabathia is competing with SPs Ivan Nova and Bryan Mitchell for the No. 5 spot in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation because Sabathia would not have much fantasy value if he is not starting. Sabathia could be an AL-only option if he does win the starting job but probably can be avoided in mixed leagues.
