Yankees | CC Sabathia to face hitters soon

Mon, 02 Mar 2015 13:56:28 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) will face hitters for the first time this spring soon, and he could pitch in a Grapefruit League game as soon as next week, according to manager Joe Girardi.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia made just eight starts in 2014 after having knee surgery, and he went 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA. Concerns about the 34-year-old's conditioning and injuries is very real, not to mention his decreased velocity in recent years. Sabathia requires some faith as a late-round flier in mixed leagues.

Yankees | CC Sabathia's weight up

Sun, 22 Feb 2015 13:09:11 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) entered spring camp weighing 305 pounds. After drastic weight losses the past two years, Sabathia and team trainers and doctors determined his ideal weight should be between 295 and 305 pounds.

Fantasy Tip: It begs the question of whether the extra weight has caused his knee to degenerate, but the doctors suggest he is at ideal weight so the weight may not be the issue. Sabathia's best days may be behind him as an earlier tip suggests, so proceed with caution and know his fantasy value has decreased.

Yankees | CC Sabathia taking PRP shots

Sat, 21 Feb 2015 10:33:28 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) said he is continuing to take platelet-rich plasma shots for his "degenerative" knee condition.

Fantasy Tip: Sabathia pitched in only eight games last season and the results (3-4, 5.28 ERA) were abysmal. He claims that his surgically-repaired right knee feels good but it would be smart to take a wait-and-see approach before you consider drafting him in the later rounds. Still, his better days appear to be behind him.

Yankees | Encouraging news for CC Sabathia

Mon, 09 Feb 2015 14:01:49 -0800

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) has had encouraging reports this offseason. Sabathia had season-ending surgery to fix a degenerative cartilage problem in his right knee last July. "He needs to pitch this spring," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said." He hasn't pitched much the last two years, so you've got to watch his arm, too, and get that ready, and be smart about that. The knee, you've got to be aware of. There's a lot that we've just got to pay attention to."

Yankees | Yanks expect CC Sabathia to be workhorse

Sat, 07 Feb 2015 10:10:51 -0800

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expects SP CC Sabathia (knee) to throw approximately 200 innings this season. "I don't know if we're going to see the No. 1 or 2 (stuff), but we do expect to get the 200 innings and high-end pitchability," Cashman said. "The biggest thing we have to stay away from that we saw in the last two years is the home run ball. The strikeouts and walks are in line with his previous year totals. If we can get him healthy and keep him healthy, I think he's going to be a positive for us."

Yankees | CC Sabathia avoids microfracture surgery

Tue, 05 Aug 2014 14:02:53 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) had a bone spur removed from his right knee when he had season-ending surgery last week, but Sabathia said he avoided the more serious microfracture surgery. Sabathia is confident that he'll be able to pitch next year. He ended the year with a 3-4 record and 5.28 ERA. Sabathia has almost no cartilage under his kneecap, and he'll require constant maintenance, including platelet-rich plasma injections and procedures to drain fluid when there is swelling. He will receive a stem-cell injection later this month, and he won't try to throw until a few weeks after that. Sabathia's bone spur was near his anterior cruciate ligament, but the ligament itself was unharmed.

Fantasy Tip: Well, at least Sabathia avoided microfracture. Still, the 34-year-old lefty is on the down slope of his career, and recurring knee problems are a bad sign that he won't ever be able to regain his velocity. Consider him a low-end pitcher to round out your rotation next season.

Yankees | CC Sabathia undergoes surgery

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 15:03:55 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) underwent arthroscopic debridement surgery on his right knee Wednesday, July 23. The southpaw will miss the rest of the 2014 season and aims to be ready for spring training 2015.

Fantasy Tip: His performance before the injury is enough to say he may not be draftable in many mixed leagues next year. We'll have more to say as we inch into next year.

Yankees | CC Sabathia hopes to be ready for 2015

Sat, 19 Jul 2014 09:07:50 -0700

New York Yankees SP CC Sabathia (knee) said the doctor performing his knee surgery is confident that he will be ready to throw off a mound by spring training. Sabathia said he would like to pitch for five or six more seasons after his current contract is over. He said he understands he may need to undergo more arthroscopic surgeries on his knee in the future. He should be able to start baseball activities six to eight weeks after the surgery.
