The San Francisco Chronicle reports the St. Louis Cardinals may be interested in San Francisco Giants SP Kirk Rueter, who was recently designated for assignment. The team would use Rueter as a reliever if it picked him up.

The Oakland Tribune's Andrew Baggarly reports San Francisco Giants SP Kirk Rueter has asked to be left in the starting rotation or to be traded to a team that could use starting pitching. "I just want to be somewhere I have a chance to be out there every fifth day," Rueter said. "If I went somewhere else and I got hit, they might send me home. I'd be fine with that. But at least I'd have four or five starts to show that."
