MLB | Judge weighs mistrial in Roger Clemens trial

The judge in the trial of former SP Roger Clemens said Thursday, July 14, he will probably have to declare a mistrial after jurors improperly heard details that he had previously ruled were inadmissible. The second day of testimony came to a grinding halt after prosecutors played tape of Clemens being questioned by a member of Congress. In the video shown to the jury, a lawmaker asks Clemens about statements made by Laura Pettitte, the wife of former SP Andy Pettitte, a friend and former teammate of Clemens on the New York Yankees and Houston Astros. The judge had previously ruled that the jurors would not be told that Ms. Pettitte had confirmed her husband's account that Clemens once admitted using human growth hormone. She told investigators that her husband told her about that conversation shortly after it happened in 1999 or 2000. The judge ruled the conversation with the wife was hearsay, and not admissible.

Retired SP Andy Pettitte said during a radio interview that he does not believe that he will ever pitch in the MLB again. "The only thing that would make me pitch again is if I felt this season was over and I felt that I needed to pray and really consider making a decision about changing what I'm doing right now. If I missed it so much and I felt in my heart like that was the thing I need to do, I would try to start thinking about it and start considering it again," Pettitte said. "But I'm just telling you right now, I don't think I will ever pitch again."

New York Yankees C Jorge Posada said he wouldn't be surprised if retired SP Andy Pettitte decides to come back at some point this summer, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. "It wouldn't surprise me," Posada said. "Andy's a competitor, and that's one thing that you're going to miss when you stop playing. Hopefully, we'll get to see him again."

However, he said if he feels something in his stomach that tells him he wants to come back in the future, he would never say never.

Updating a previous report, free-agent SP Andy Pettitte (Yankees) has decided to retire, and the New York Yankees said Thursday, Feb. 3. that a morning news conference Friday, Feb. 4, will be held at Yankee Stadium for the pitcher to make the announcement, reports Ron Blum, of The Associated Press. "I'm really sad that Andy is going to retire," C Jorge Posada said. "He was so much more than a teammate to me - he was one of my closest friends."
