Updating previous reports, free-agent SP Brad Penny (Tigers) has signed a one-year contract worth $4 million with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of the Japanese League, with the opportunity to make an additional $3.5 million in performance bonuses. The deal also includes a $4.5 million option for the 2013 season.

Free-agent SP Brad Penny (Tigers) is nearing a contract with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League, according to a Japanese media outlet. "The deal has not been finalized yet, but I hear we are in the final stages," Fukuoka team chairman Sadaharu Oh said Tuesday, Jan. 31. "We see him as a pitcher for our starting rotation." Penny confirmed Wednesday, Feb. 1, that he might be in Japan as early as next week.

Detroit Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said free-agent OF Magglio Ordonez (Tigers) and 2B Carlos Guillen (Tigers) are unlikely to return to the team next year. "Magglio and Carlos — tremendous pros who've done a lot for our organization," Dombrowski said. "A couple of guys who have been integral parts. Odds are likely they won't be back." The team will make a push to re-sign 2B Ramon Santiago, but they expect other teams to be in the mix as well. RP Joel Zumaya and SP Brad Penny are also unlikely to be re-signed.

Tigers | Bullpen hammered in series ending loss

The Detroit Tigers bullpen was pounded for nine runs - eight earned - in 6 2/3 innings in a loss in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series against the Texas Rangers. SP Brad Penny was the worst offender, being roughed up for five earned runs and seven hits in just 1 2/3 innings. He threw just 21 of his 46 pitches for strikes.
