Free-agent SP Carl Pavano (spleen) will not return to pitching this year after suffering a serious injury that required the removal of his spleen. "Carl will not be physically able to play this year as he recovers from his spleen removal and the complications that followed," agent Dave Pepe said. "His hope is that he can give it a try next year." Pavano isn't close to working out yet.

Free-agent SP Carl Pavano (spleen) underwent surgery last week to fix a lacerated spleen and has been hospitalized. His agent said that Pavano suffered the injury in mid-January when he was injured while shoveling snow at his home in Vermont. Pavano is hoping to leave the hospital this week, and he's not putting a timetable on his return to baseball activities.
