Rockies | Roy Oswalt impressive in extended spring training

Sun, 19 May 2013 12:45:26 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Roy Oswalt allowed one hit (a bunt single) over five scoreless innings in an extended spring training start against the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday, May 18, with nine strikeouts. The organization is expected to evaluate him after making four or five starts for Double-A Tulsa.

Rockies | Jeff Francis to DL

Thu, 16 May 2013 15:09:31 -0700

The Colorado Rockies placed SP Jeff Francis (groin) on the 15-day disabled list with a left groin strain Thursday, May 16, and designated INF Reid Brignac for assignment. 3B DJ LeMahieu and P Rob Scahill were both recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs.

Fantasy Tip: Tyler Chatwood and Drew Pomeranz are both candidates to replace Francis in the rotation, starting Sunday. Roy Oswalt is probably the best long-term bet for this rotation spot, though, but all three of these options are risky propositions in mixed formats.

Rockies | Roy Oswalt to start Saturday

Tue, 14 May 2013 16:13:38 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Roy Oswalt will make an extended spring training start Saturday, May 18, and then he'll head to Double-A Tulsa, where he could receive around three starts. The Rockies hope to use him for 15 to 18 starts this year.

Fantasy Tip: With a rotation spot eventually in his grasp, Oswalt will become an option in deep mixed setups, but there isn't much upside these days with a pitcher that looked washed up with the Texas Rangers. However, he was battling through injuries then, so a slight rebound could be in order, but pitching at Coors Field doesn't offer much hope.

Rockies | Roy Oswalt's contract terms

Fri, 10 May 2013 13:47:57 -0700

Colorado Rockies SP Roy Oswalt's minor league deal will pay him $15,000 per month in the minors and a pro-rated portion of $2.3 million in the majors. He'll receive a $400,000 bonus for making eight and 10 starts each and $200,000 each for making 14, 16 and 18 starts. Oswalt will get $100,000 for 50 innings pitched, $150,000 for 60 and $200,000 for 70, 80, 90, 100 and 110. If he's not on the roster by June 18 or 28, he can request his release.

Fantasy Tip: The Rockies clearly would like Oswalt to help out their starting rotation. He fought through injuries last year with the Texas Rangers and was hurt by unfortunate HR/FB and hit rates. If he can stay healthy and hold up to the innings of a starter again, he could rebound, but his age and Coors Field are unlikely to allow that to happen. Keep him on your radar in NL leagues, for now.

Rockies | Roy Oswalt signs

Thu, 02 May 2013 15:22:02 -0700

The Colorado Rockies signed free-agent SP Roy Oswalt (Rangers) to a minor league deal Thursday, May 2.

Fantasy Tip: Oswalt will build up his innings in extended spring training and could be promoted if he's effective in the minors. A major league call-up isn't guaranteed, though, and it's unclear if the Rockies would consider using him as a starter, although Oswalt probably has no interest in pitching in long relief again. This move involves minimal risk for Colorado, and you should treat it similarly in fantasy baseball. For now, he's only worth a flier in deep NL-only leagues.

Tue, 09 Apr 2013 11:39:24 -0700

Bob Garber, agent for free-agent SP Roy Oswalt (Rangers), said Oswalt has been throwing at Mississippi State but has not thrown 100 pitches to this point. Garber said no interested teams have contacted him at this point and that he will not look for a team to sign Oswalt until Oswalt's arm is ready to go.

MLB | Roy Oswalt working out

Wed, 20 Mar 2013 16:40:12 -0700

Free-agent SP Roy Oswalt (Rangers) is currently working out at Mississippi State and is waiting for an offer from a contending team, according to his agent, Bob Garber. Geography will not be a factor for Oswalt this year, and he's open to pitching in relief. However, he still prefers to start.

Fantasy Tip: Oswalt probably won't be valuable in anything beyond deep AL leagues if he signs with a team unless he's starting somewhere, which is unlikely.

MLB | Roy Oswalt not interested in closing

Fri, 01 Feb 2013 10:01:11 -0800

Free-agent SP Roy Oswalt (Rangers) isn't interested in becoming a reliever, or more specifically, a closer. The New York Mets visited with Oswalt and tried to convince him to make the switch to a late-inning reliever, according to two baseball sources. However, Oswalt won't be an option because of his lack of interest in this move.
