Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Joe Blanton thinks he corrected a major mechanical flaw last September, long after he was demoted to the bullpen after a disastrous season. The Angels aren't counting on a bounce back, but an injury to SP Mark Mulder (Achilles') makes Blanton important for rotation depth. "Joe needs to make adjustments and put his best foot forward. He had a terrible season, but when he's throwing to the best of his ability he's capable of getting major league hitters out," manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim general manager Jerry Dipoto said Tuesday, Feb. 18, that he is in no rush to adding starting pitching after an injury to SP Mark Mulder (Achilles'). "I don't think it's a critical need," Dipoto said, "but once we get into games, we'll find out."

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Mark Mulder made sure he was ready for the rigors of a long season by throwing a couple of 100-pitch simulated games. He then tossed 40-pitch bullpens twice a week heading into spring training. "Now I know I'm ready," Mulder said. "Absolutely. I've never thrown this much coming into a spring training, but I also don't know if I've ever been this prepared, either, just because of everything I've done." Mulder hasn't thrown in the big leagues since 2008.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SPs Garrett Richards and Hector Santiago are virtual locks for the starting rotation this year, but SP Tyler Skaggs will have to prove he's worthy of a spot this spring. If not, the Halos will look to SPs Joe Blanton or Mark Mulder as a stopgap until he's ready. "But our season doesn't hinge on whether or not Tyler Skaggs is able to make the staff out of Spring Training and become a star on a dime," general manager Jerry Dipoto added. "We're going to give him the proper time to adjust."

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Mark Mulder decided to make a comeback after emulating the windup of Los Angeles Dodgers RP Paco Rodriguez last fall, and Mulder was impressed with the results when he started throwing again. "I haven't had the ball come out of my hand like this in a very long time, and it's fun," Mulder said. "I never threw like this in all my years in St. Louis. And I mean that. It was smoke and mirrors that first year in St. Louis. It was just sinker or split, because I had nothing else. My arm action was kind of deteriorating. And I'm gonna run with it. I'm gonna see what happens."
His command and velocity were the same as his playing days, and his fastball was between 89-92 mph when he threw for interested teams last year. Mulder is separating his hands much earlier in his delivery, but he doesn't have a hitch in his delivery, which puts less stress on his shoulder and upper body.
Fantasy Tip: Mulder's new delivery should go a long way in keeping him healthy in his comeback bid. He might be a candidate to be stashed in deep AL-only leagues if he proves effective.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and free-agent SP Mark Mulder (Cardinals) reached an agreement on a minor-league contract Wednesday, Jan. 1. The deal includes an invitation to spring training.
Fantasy Tip: Mulder is making a comeback, and he has a lot to prove before fantasy owners gain confidence in him. The lefty is simply added for depth, and his potential for 2014 won't be known until he faces live hitting again in spring training.
