He had a 101-degree fever and spent some time lying on a table in the clubhouse before starting Game 6 of the World Series, but pitched because manager Charlie Manuel had no other options. "Everybody had it," Martinez said of the flu. "(Joe) Blanton. (Shane) Victorino." Martinez said he experienced an asthma-like attack in the first inning and had trouble breathing in the cold weather.

The team is not seriously considering using SP Pedro Martinez as a closer. "We can't rely on Brad Lidge to be the ninth-inning guy. It's not because we don't like him. We have a tremendous amount of respect for him. He was the guy standing when we won the World Series. But the fact of the matter is, he hasn't demonstrated he can do that now," Amaro said. Amaro also mentioned RPs Tyler Walker and J.C. Romero as pitchers who could record outs in the ninth inning. P Chan Ho Park could also enter the mix at some point. The team does not expect RP Brett Myers (shoulder) to assume the closer's role if he makes a successful return from an injured shoulder.
