Wed, 15 May 2013 15:11:10 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder), who missed 14 games with a subluxation of his left shoulder, will continue pitching out of the bullpen until he's healthy enough to swing a bat again. Once he can, he'll jump back into the starting rotation. "We still see him as a starting pitcher," said manager Bud Black. "But that will be left shoulder-related and whether he's physically able to do that. Right now, his strength is improving. In due time, he has to get in a cage." Fantasy Tip: Ross has struggled with command in his career, but late last season he showed ground-ball rates that gave optimism for his future. A move to SD made him even more intriguing. Clayton Richard (illness) will return to the rotation soon, so it's unknown who exactly Ross would replace in the starting five when he's healthy. Jason Marquis or Eric Stults might be in jeopardy if they aren't pitching well by then.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 15:24:29 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner will make the start against the San Francisco Giants Friday, April 26, and manager Bud Black foresees Cashner staying in the rotation for the long term, based on his performance. Cashner is expected to throw 80-90 pitches Friday. Fantasy Tip: Cashner is essentially taking Tyson Ross' (shoulder) rotation spot, but the important part is that Black and the coaching staff are completely open to keeping Cashner, one of their better strikeout-inducing pitchers, in the rotation. Jason Marquis or Eric Stults may lose their rotation spots when Ross returns, or Ross could be sent to a long-relief role. The bottom line here, though, is that Cashner should now be owned in all formats now that he has a rotation spot once again.
Wed, 17 Apr 2013 11:20:31 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Jason Marquis is 7-4 with a 2.53 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) against the Los Angeles Dodgers, lifetime, following his superb outing against them on Tuesday, April 16. The ERA is his second-best against any MLB team, with his 1.77 ERA against the Seattle Mariners being the best. In his career at Dodger Stadium, the right-hander is 5-3 with a 2.43 ERA. "I like the mound here," explained Marquis. "I like the atmosphere here." Fantasy Tip: Mixed leaguers seem right not to trust Marquis, but he's been useful in the right situations. Last night he held the thumpless Dodgers to one run on three hits and a walk, with five K's, in 7 2/3 frames, and he has a 2.41 ERA through three starts. Still, the good times are unlikely to continue all season, so only NL-only players should look in his direction and be judicious with his deployment.
Wed, 27 Mar 2013 14:21:16 -0700 San Diego Padres SPs Edinson Volquez, Clayton Richard, Eric Stults and Jason Marquis make up the first four spots in the starting rotation, and SPs Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner (thumb) are believed to be battling it out for the final spot. The team won't need a fifth starter until April 6. Fantasy Tip: Both Ross and Cashner could be quite productive in SD's five-man rotation. The team may decide to be cautious with Cashner as he comes off an unfortunate hunting accident, but they'd prefer not to send him to the bullpen because he has major upside as a starter. Cashner has much more upside as a high-strikeout pitching commodity and should be owned in more leagues than Ross.
Wed, 20 Mar 2013 22:05:15 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Jason Marquis continues to get good results from his newest pitch, the changeup. "It's surprised me," Marquis said. "I'm not going to say it's a Trevor Hoffman or Pedro Martinez type of changeup, but I feel it can become a good weapon for me." Fantasy Tip: Marquis is slotted as the team's third starter, but he is still only worth a look as a back-end fantasy starter in NL-only formats. Mixed leaguers won't want to bother with Marquis unless he pieces together a few solid starts in April.
Tue, 12 Feb 2013 12:34:57 -0800 The San Diego Padres have several open starting rotation spots after SPs Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez and Jason Marquis. Ps Anthony Bass, Casey Kelly, Tyson Ross, Eric Stults, Freddy Garcia and Robbie Erlin are all in the picture. SP Tim Stauffer (elbow) is about two weeks behind the other pitchers. SPs Andrew Cashner (thumb), Joe Wieland (elbow) and Cory Luebke (elbow) aren't options because they are rehabbing from injuries. Cashner is expected to be back on a mound by March 1 and Wieland and Luebke won't return until midseason or later after having Tommy John surgery.
Mon, 03 Dec 2012 06:50:17 -0800 The San Diego Padres re-signed SP Jason Marquis to a one-year, $3 million deal.
Mon, 03 Dec 2012 06:16:57 -0800 The San Diego Padres are close to re-signing SP Jason Marquis.
Mon, 10 Sep 2012 22:03:26 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Jason Marquis (wrist) has thrown four bullpen sessions, even with a cast on his left hand. He remains intent on pitching again this season. He will have a second CT scan on the bone in his wrist Sept. 21. If the test reveals enough bone growth, Marquis might be cleared to pitch in some capacity.
Thu, 23 Aug 2012 13:56:24 -0700 The San Diego Padres put SP Jason Marquis (wrist) on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left wrist Thursday, Aug. 23, and recalled RP Brad Boxberger from Triple-A Tucson in a corresponding move. Marquis was 6-7 with a 4.04 ERA in 15 starts with the Friars.
